Chapter 34: Don’t Force Me to Perform My Duty as a Security Guard!
"Pfft—"
Lin Feng was in the midst of taking a sip of water, trying to compose himself, but those words nearly made him spit it out.
“What nonsense are you talking about! Am I that kind of person?”
“But you didn’t even dare to admit it when she called you...”
Li Hao looked at Lin Feng with a mischievous glint in his eye. “I mean, that woman is pretty good-looking! She’s the director of a small company, a career woman! And you, you heartless boy, would dare to treat her like that...”
Lin Feng rolled his eyes at Li Hao, unable to help himself, and shot back, “She’s much older than me. Don’t be ridiculous.”
“So what if she’s older? She’s probably twenty-eight or twenty-nine at most. These days, it’s already lucky to have someone. As the saying goes, ‘A woman three years older is worth a bar of gold.’ You could be holding two bars by now!”
Li Hao grinned, continuing to tease him.
Lin Feng’s lips twitched. Ninety percent of what Li Hao said was off the mark, but he did have a point with the rest.
Xu Zhiqing really was quite attractive, with a great figure—a textbook example of a career-oriented woman. But unlike others, Lin Feng knew the truth. The so-called “career woman” image was just a facade. In the company, Xu Zhiqing was nothing more than a figurehead; apart from signing necessary contracts, she barely managed anything else.
During the two years he ran Xu’s company, Xu Zhiqing lived a life of comfort and ease. Never did he expect that now she’d have to attend meetings herself.
There must be no one left to rely on in the Xu family.
He didn’t even need to guess. With Xu Jie the way he was, he could never amount to much. Naturally, the burden of the company had fallen on Xu Zhiqing’s shoulders.
Lin Feng shook his head. He was no longer a member of the Xu family. Why should he care?
He fell silent, standing by the door with his hands clasped behind his back, eyes fixed forward, letting his mind drift in idle reverie.
Seeing this, Li Hao said nothing more and followed Lin Feng’s example, spacing out and slacking off.
The meeting lasted until ten o’clock.
Li Hao checked the time and opened the conference room door. Inside, Liu Tianhan’s detached voice rang out, “These are the terms offered by Yihan Group. You all can discuss amongst yourselves. Let’s take a short break.”
With that, she clicked out in her high heels.
As soon as she reached the door, she called to Li Hao, “Xiao Li, go downstairs and get me a latte—freshly ground.”
“Yes!”
Li Hao nodded repeatedly and hurried off.
After giving her instructions, she shot Lin Feng a look. He understood immediately and followed her into the lounge next door.
Back in the conference room, as soon as Liu Tianhan left, the directors of the various companies began calling their own offices to discuss strategy.
Xu Zhiqing, however, remained motionless in her seat.
The moment she’d seen Lin Feng downstairs, she hadn’t heard a thing Liu Tianhan said during the meeting. Ever since the conference room door had opened, she’d been staring at Lin Feng by the door, her gaze following him as he trailed after Liu Tianhan into the adjoining lounge.
Her heart skipped a beat.
As she’d suspected, Lin Feng’s relationship with Liu Tianhan was anything but ordinary.
That thought put her at ease.
She quickly stood up and said to Xu Jie, “Jie, wait here for me. I’ll be right back.”
“Sis, you—” Xu Jie began to ask where she was going, but before he could finish, Xu Zhiqing hurried away, leaving his words unsaid.
As soon as Xu Zhiqing exited the conference room, she spotted Liu Tianhan walking in the opposite direction toward the restroom.
Seeing the lounge door open, her heart pounded with excitement as she stepped inside.
Lin Feng was sitting at the desk in the lounge, scrolling through his phone without hurry, a bottle of mineral water in his hand.
Seeing this familiar figure, Xu Zhiqing was overcome with emotion. She smiled at Lin Feng and softly called, “Feng?”
At the sound of her voice, Lin Feng glanced up, his brow instantly furrowing when he saw who it was.
Xu Zhiqing had intended to ask Lin Feng directly why he was being so cold, but the atmosphere was so heavy, and Lin Feng’s expression so unreadable, that her smile froze on her face. Awkwardly, she forced a polite greeting, “It’s really been a long time. I didn’t expect to find you working at Yihan Group. What a coincidence!”
Coincidence?
It was nothing more than that madwoman’s scheme!
A flicker of impatience crossed Lin Feng’s eyes. Having already been manipulated by Chu Lingshuang, his mood was sour. Now, seeing Xu Zhiqing only made his frustration worse.
“Do you need something?” His tone was icy, brimming with barely suppressed anger.
Xu Zhiqing forced a strained smile, stepping closer to Lin Feng. “Feng, are you still holding a grudge against Mom and Dad? It’s not what you think. They...”
“If that’s what you came to say, then please leave.”
Lin Feng cut her off coldly. “I’m no longer part of the Xu family, nor do I care to know anything about them.”
Xu Zhiqing was stunned by his merciless words. She stared at him, momentarily at a loss before scolding, “Feng! How can you talk like that? No matter what, Mom and Dad raised you for so many years. Now you—”
“Isn’t leaving with nothing enough?”
Lin Feng fired back without hesitation. “I didn’t take a single cent from the Xu family. I’ve already repaid every bit of kindness they showed me!”
Xu Zhiqing bit her lip, staring at Lin Feng in disbelief.
She couldn’t deny that everything he said was true. The Xu family owed much of their success in recent years to Lin Feng, and he really had left with nothing. But after so many years together, how could he be so cold...
Seeing her fall silent, Lin Feng knew his words had hit their mark. He curled his lips into a cold smile. “What’s wrong? Are you trying to guilt-trip me now, Xu Zhiqing?”
“I...” Xu Zhiqing was left speechless, struggling for words before finally managing, “Feng, we may not be related by blood, but we grew up together. I’m at least half a big sister to you. How can you talk to me like this...”
Her face flushed with anger, clearly agitated.
She really shouldn’t have brought that up. The mention only stoked Lin Feng’s fury.
She still remembered?
All those years of affection, gone in an instant. After Xu Jie’s return, they hadn’t even been willing to give him a shred of trust.
When Xu Jie slandered him, when Xu Tangde cursed him and drove him from the Xu family, where was Xu Zhiqing then?
Sitting in the office he’d built for her, sipping tea, admiring flowers, playing on her phone?
She had no right to say such things.
Lin Feng’s anger boiled over. He shot to his feet, his tall frame looming over Xu Zhiqing, who visibly wilted under his imposing presence.
“This is the Yihan Group’s lounge. Please leave.”
As he spoke, he raised the stun baton at his belt and barked, “Don’t make me exercise my duties as a security guard!”
