Chapter 140: Now That’s a Man
At the police station, Qin Xuan and Dongfang Qingwan were quickly separated and each asked to recount the events as they happened.
Qin Xuan answered truthfully, of course.
“So you’re saying this campus shooting incident was entirely because of you?” The middle-aged policeman, Xu Bin, frowned as he looked at Qin Xuan. Xu Bin was no stranger to Qin Xuan; he was the deputy captain of the criminal investigation team.
Previously, Xu Bin had been little more than a laborer under Yang Weiyang’s father’s command—any major credit for achievements never went to him, but the exhausting and arduous work always did. That changed recently when Yang Weiyang’s father stepped down, and Xu Bin got a new superior, instantly feeling much more at ease.
“Yes. I don’t even know why Li Tianyuan hates me so much—he’s gone completely mad,” Qin Xuan said, wearing an innocent expression. He knew full well that Li Tianyuan’s hatred stemmed from Li Shihao, but to outsiders, Li Shihao’s death seemed like a terrifying accident. Not many knew the truth behind it, certainly not Xu Bin, so Qin Xuan had no intention of confessing the previous matters.
“Alright, I’ve taken note. Once the other investigations are complete, you’ll be free to go,” Xu Bin said with a smile.
Xu Bin knew exactly who Li Tianyuan was: chairman of the Li Corporation and the current head of the Li family—a man whose power and influence only half a month ago could shake the entire city of Jinling with just a stomp. Though the Li family had since fallen, the corporation bankrupt and all related forces affected, Li Tianyuan’s residual influence lingered, especially after his recent actions.
This matter was bound to involve the upper echelons of Jinling once again.
Xu Bin felt helpless but grateful that no one had died this time. Unlike abroad, where school shootings often claimed dozens of lives, the domestic security environment was evidently much better. Even though Li Tianyuan and his associates had firearms, they were only ordinary handguns, incomparable to the large-scale weapons freely circulating overseas.
After the interrogation, Xu Bin casually chatted with Qin Xuan. He had been curious about Qin Xuan for a while. Last time, when they arrested Lei Jinde’s son, the Audi’s rear tire had exploded violently, but someone had warned him not to confront Qin Xuan. Now, even five guns couldn’t faze Qin Xuan, giving him almost a legendary aura. With Qin Xuan finally in the police station, Xu Bin was determined not to miss this opportunity.
Though it was casual conversation, Qin Xuan guessed Xu Bin was fishing for information. He deflected skillfully, attributing his luck and nothing more. After half an afternoon of questioning without gaining anything useful, Xu Bin was forced to release him. The higher-ups had already been informed of the shocking news and instructed that Qin Xuan be treated with care, so Xu Bin dared not act rashly.
“Qin Xuan, here’s my number. If anything happens, call me directly. The Jinling Public Security Bureau will respond immediately,” Xu Bin said, handing over his phone number as Qin Xuan was about to leave.
Xu Bin sensed that Qin Xuan was no ordinary person, especially given his close ties to those above. Befriending him could only bring benefits.
“I’ve noted it down, but I hope I never have to use this number,” Qin Xuan smiled.
“Oh?” Xu Bin was a little surprised, wondering if Qin Xuan was being disrespectful.
“If I have to call you, it means something bad has happened. I just hope everything stays peaceful from now on. Though no one died this time, there’s no guarantee it will be the same next time…” Qin Xuan forced a bitter smile, thinking of the boys from the first business class still in the hospital.
“I see,” Xu Bin smiled. “Your classmates are at the hospital now. None of them are seriously injured. The one who was shot is already undergoing surgery to remove the bullet. Since it’s not a vital area, there’s no danger.”
“Thank you,” Qin Xuan replied.
“Are you going back to school now? I can escort you,” Xu Bin offered.
“I want to visit the hospital first,” Qin Xuan said.
“Alright, I’ll arrange a car for you,” Xu Bin called a police vehicle over.
At that moment, Dongfang Qingwan, Shen Yina, and others came out of the interrogation room, along with a group of girls from the first business class. They all gathered together.
“Other girls, please head back first. Qingwan and I will go to the hospital,” Qin Xuan said.
Dongfang Qingwan nodded. Zhou Xiaoyu, Gao Tie, Xiao Gang, and the other boys were all in the hospital, injured while protecting Dongfang Qingwan. Naturally, she should go see them. Besides, Qin Xuan didn’t feel comfortable letting Dongfang Qingwan return to school alone.
A few girls came over, chatted briefly with Dongfang Qingwan, then said their goodbyes. Around ten of them took the police car back to the school.
To Qin Xuan’s surprise, Shen Yina did not return with them; instead, she stayed behind.
“I’m going with you to the hospital,” Shen Yina said.
She didn’t want to leave so soon and hoped to spend more time with Qin Xuan. Although she felt like a third wheel, she didn’t care.
“...” Qin Xuan didn’t know how to refuse, so he let her come along.
“Qin Xuan, looks like this girl likes you,” Dongfang Qingwan whispered with a slight smile as she leaned toward Qin Xuan’s ear. She already knew about Qin Xuan saving Shen Yina before and found it amusing. Accidentally entering the wrong room and ending up with a campus beauty—definitely no ordinary person.
“Not possible,” Qin Xuan said, skeptical.
After all, he had saved Su Muqing four times, and she had yet to show any sign of devotion. Shen Yina only once—how could it be that easy? More importantly, Qin Xuan didn’t want to get involved with too many worldly people; if he left in three months, it would be a tragic farewell.
Though Qin Xuan didn’t believe it, Dongfang Qingwan caught the expression on Shen Yina’s face and found it amusing but said nothing. After all, she didn’t know Shen Yina personally.
The three were driven to the hospital by the police car, where Xu Bin waved them off.
Gao Tie, Xiao Gang, and the others had minor injuries but, given the seriousness of the incident and their status as students, they received the best care immediately.
They were admitted to the finest wards, each attended by a dedicated nurse.
When Qin Xuan and Dongfang Qingwan visited Gao Tie, he was grinning ear to ear. The reason was simple: his nurse was a fresh-faced trainee, pure and youthful.
Seeing Gao Tie’s swollen eye, Qin Xuan and Dongfang Qingwan were deeply moved.
Shen Yina couldn’t help but smile at Gao Tie’s comical appearance but quickly stopped herself. She knew this boy had faced the assailants without hesitation, risking everything to protect the girls in their class.
While feeling a bit envious of Dongfang Qingwan, Shen Yina thought to herself: this is what a real man is!
She couldn’t help but recall Mao Jialiang’s scornful expression at the time, feeling even more disgusted.
