Chapter 4: Agreement Reached, Spielberg Comes Out of Retirement
Chapter 4: An Agreement Reached, and Steven Spielberg Joins the Project
"Tell me what you're thinking first."
Qin Feng said, "You decide on the director. When filming begins, I need to be on set. Assign me a role as an assistant director or director's assistant."
"As for the fee for that position, I don't want a cent. I'll only take my screenwriter's share."
"If you still can't agree to that, then I'll have to go talk to another company."
Kennedy's eyes flickered.
This Qin Feng wanted to be a director so badly that he would even accept being an assistant director without any labor fee?
She studied the young man across from her again and again, then nodded to herself, feeling deep respect for him.
She was convinced at least of one thing: his wish to direct was not driven by money.
A young man chasing a dream.
In that case, they could not let him take the script to another company.
"All right, no problem," Kennedy said with a smile. "I can make that call. I'll also raise your script advance to 150,000, and the five percent share remains unchanged."
"Qin Feng, you can sign the contract today and collect the advance."
"Agreed." Qin Feng answered readily.
"We'll have an emergency internal meeting shortly. Come to the company tomorrow morning at nine."
She called the head of human resources.
Soon after, the HR director knocked and entered, and Kennedy specifically went over the contract details.
Before Qin Feng left the office, Kennedy and Cape stood up.
"Qin Feng, a pleasure working with you."
"A pleasure working with you too!"
After signing the contract with HR, Qin Feng went to the finance department, where the 150,000-dollar advance was transferred to his bank card. Only then did he walk out of the gates of Universal Pictures.
Outside, the sun was bright.
Across the sky, a passenger jet cut through the clouds.
Qin Feng's heart surged with excitement.
The advance was already in hand.
I will prove to the entire world that, as a Chinese man, I can become the finest science fiction film director of all time!
The humiliation and failures of the past would never happen again!
Screech!
As he walked, a sleek blue supercar stopped not far ahead, kicking up a thin haze of dust.
Its body was like a blue cheetah, brimming with speed and power, instantly drawing Qin Feng's attention.
Damn. So cool!
The door opened, and a handsome man stepped out with agile, athletic movements.
He had short hair, striking features, deep eyes, and a confident smile on his face.
Qin Feng recognized him at a glance.
The star who passed away in 2013 in his previous life, once the lead in the Fast and Furious series, Antarctic Adventure, Running Scared, and more.
The eternal Paul Walker.
The two brushed past each other.
Qin Feng suddenly snapped out of it and stopped at once. "Mr. Walker."
"Ah... are you calling me?" Paul Walker turned back with a smile, warm and approachable.
He had never seen Qin Feng before and looked at the young man from the East with curiosity.
"Yes." Qin Feng thought for a moment, organizing his words. "I'm your fan, and I have a suggestion."
"Please, go ahead."
"If possible, please stay away from racing. Racing does carry certain risks..."
Paul Walker paused slightly, looking at Qin Feng, who did not seem to be joking.
After a couple of seconds, he said, "Thank you for the advice, brother."
"But... let me ask you this: you have your own hobbies and obsessions too, don't you?"
"...Yes."
Paul Walker smiled, bright as the sun.
"Then I'm afraid that's not so easy to do, brother."
He waved and turned back toward the company entrance.
Qin Feng watched Paul Walker's retreating figure, lost in thought.
Yes.
Everyone has their own hobbies and obsessions.
Wasn't he the same?
...
Back at the apartment, Warner Brothers and Fox called again, but Qin Feng turned down both invitations.
He needed to focus on the film's pre-production.
He opened his computer and checked the script once more.
Then he read a great deal of material on dinosaurs and genetic engineering.
Before he knew it, night had fallen.
The next day.
Qin Feng reported to the company.
The staff gave him an ID card, quickly printed business cards, and arranged a temporary office for him.
After a flurry of activity, screenwriter David Koepp called him to a meeting.
In the conference room, the moment Qin Feng walked in, more than a dozen people were already seated inside, all of them looking at him.
They took their seats.
Kathleen Kennedy said with a smile, "Today's meeting is a script discussion. The script was sent to everyone yesterday. The first Jurassic Park film needs to get underway as soon as possible."
A heavyset man across from her said, "Manager, we've never made a science fiction film of this kind before. We could say we're starting from zero. Who should direct it?"
Kennedy glanced at her watch. "The time is about right. The director will be here any moment."
Soon, the conference room door opened and an old man entered.
He was over sixty, with white hair and beard, round spectacles, and a kindly smile. He looked vigorous and full of spirit.
His face radiated confidence, composure, and wisdom.
Everyone in the room was shaken to the core. They all knew exactly who had arrived.
The company had many directors, and countless young ones besides.
But to be able to invite this old gentleman spoke volumes about just how important this script was.
Not only them.
Even Qin Feng, a Chinese man, recognized him instantly.
The legendary Hollywood director: Steven Spielberg.
One of the most outstanding filmmakers of our era, known throughout the world for his boundless creativity, astonishing visuals, and moving stories.
In this world, even though he had directed relatively few science fiction films, his work in every other genre remained unparalleled.
The Indiana Jones series, The Terminal, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws...
Every one of them was a true classic.
Qin Feng let out a breath. In his previous life, this movie had originally been made by this old master.
He had never expected that after crossing over, the script would still end up in the old man's hands.
"Sorry to have kept everyone waiting," Spielberg said with an apologetic smile.
"All right, everyone's here," Kennedy said. "As you can see, the director of this film will be Mr. Spielberg, who will be taking full charge of the production."
"Also... let me introduce a new member, the chief screenwriter of this project, Mr. Qin Feng!"
Qin Feng stood. "Hello, everyone. My name is Qin Feng. I'm from China. It's a pleasure to work with all of you."
"Ah!! So you're the one who wrote this script?" Spielberg exclaimed, immediately turning to look at Qin Feng.
Last night, after he received the script, he had only seen the title before setting down his dinner and devouring it without pause.
When he finished reading, Spielberg found it impossible to remain calm. The person who wrote this script was simply a genius! He had once wanted to make films about dinosaurs and prehistoric life, but had never found the right script.
It was as though he had finally found a kindred spirit.
He had even slept poorly that night and had called Kennedy once in the middle of it, sharing some of his thoughts.
By morning, he had gotten up late, and now, looking at Qin Feng, he was so excited he could hardly put it into words.
He rose to his feet, walked over to Qin Feng, and extended his hand.
"Qin Feng, this dinosaur-themed work is absolutely marvelous. I am honored to direct it!"
"Thank you! Thank you for writing such an outstanding piece!"
The End
