Chapter 7: I Dislike Being Rejected
The tall man was surrounded by a crowd, having just concluded an international conference, and was speaking fluently in a foreign language with the blonde-haired, blue-eyed man beside him.
It was the first time Nan Xing had seen Li Beitian exuding such an elite aura. Dressed in a well-tailored dark suit, his sharp features and calm gaze made him stand out like a crane among chickens, radiating a mature and steady presence.
Nan Xing’s pupils shimmered, and the corner of her mouth lifted into a faint smile she hadn’t even noticed herself.
By the time she was daydreaming, Li Beitian had already passed by her.
Nan Xing, mindful of the others present, merely raised her hand in greeting.
However, Li Beitian didn’t even spare her a glance and walked straight past.
Was he pretending not to know her?
Nan Xing’s face fell, her lips pouting in displeasure, and a strange irritation welled up inside her.
It wasn’t until a gentle voice from a waiter whispered in her ear, “Miss, your crystal pork knuckle has been packed,” that she snapped back to reality.
She thanked the waiter and, distracted, headed out.
At the restaurant entrance, a black business car was parked.
The blonde man sat in the back seat by the door, speaking broken Chinese to the man standing on the steps, “Mr. Li, are you sure you won’t join us for drinks to celebrate?”
“No, I have some personal matters to attend to.” Li Beitian glanced back as if waiting for someone.
“Alright then, looking forward to our next collaboration.”
The blonde man showed a hint of regret, nodded to the driver, and the black luxury car quickly disappeared into the mist and rain.
“Fourth Master, that person earlier seemed to be Miss Nan Xing,” Qi Zheng remarked, glancing at the increasing rain outside the corridor as the other man departed.
Li Beitian pursed his thin lips into a straight line and shot him a sharp glance.
Qi Zheng immediately realized his mistake and covered his mouth affectionately, “Fourth Master, you should stay here and avoid the rain. I’ll fetch the car.”
With that, he darted off faster than a rabbit.
Nan Xing stepped out of the restaurant and cursed Li Sicheng under her breath a thousand times when she saw the torrential downpour outside.
She had no idea which uncovered drain he had slipped out from, but the rain wasn’t worse than his lack of decency.
Still, she had no time to dwell on that—what mattered most was hurrying back to the hospital before he could exaggerate things in front of Nan Weiguo.
She opened Alipay, tapped on the Didi ride-hailing app, and selected multiple vehicle types at once.
---
On rainy days, many people hail rides. Five minutes passed, and she was still waiting in line.
Just as her patience wore thin, distant headlights flashed, and a black Maybach drove toward her.
Through the curtain of rain, Nan Xing made out the license plate: Bei A88888.
Wasn’t that the same car she had seen at the Nan family’s main gate that day?
And just now, she had bumped into Li Beitian here again. The car’s owner was obvious.
The window rolled down, revealing Li Beitian’s sharply defined face.
The man leaned indifferently against the back seat, his coat off, wearing a pristine white shirt with sleeves casually rolled to his forearms, exposing an unknown brand wristwatch that gleamed under the car’s interior light.
“What are you standing there for? Planning to walk back in the rain?”
His voice was lazy, and his deep, cold gaze fixed on Nan Xing.
A cold wind blew, making Nan Xing sniffle from the chill. “Fourth Uncle,” she called weakly.
Finally, under his intimidating stare, she meekly climbed into the car.
The ride was silent except for the rain tapping against the windows.
The atmosphere was awkward.
Nan Xing glanced sideways at the man towering over her by more than a head. Li Beitian had his eyes closed, his usual indifferent expression unchanged.
Just now, he had pretended not to know her. Why now was he so magnanimous as to give her a ride?
While she pondered, Li Beitian’s deep voice broke the silence. “Where did you go today?”
“To the hospital.”
“That’s all?”
Nan Xing blinked, sensing an unspoken meaning but unable to find fault. “No, also here,” she said, pointing toward the garden restaurant fading in the distance.
Li Beitian’s gaze fixed on the takeout box. His brows furrowed deeply. “You came out in the rain just for this?”
“I’m not eating it alone,” Nan Xing answered without hesitation.
“Hm?” Li Beitian was momentarily stunned, then casually asked, “Who’s it for?”
Their eyes met, and his icy stare was anything but friendly. “For your precious nephew,” she said, a trace of complaint in her tone. “He’s out in the world chasing fortune, and on such a rainy day, running errands isn’t easy. I don’t get paid for the errand and have to pay out of pocket for his meal...”
“Is that enough?”
Before Nan Xing could react, Li Beitian pulled out a black card.
A global limited edition.
By invitation only.
Money alone wasn’t enough; one needed status, position, and background.
Ordinary people could only dream.
Nan Xing was stunned—she hadn’t expected him to be so generous.
She wasn’t short of money, and what she’d just said was a joke.
Li Beitian...
Suddenly, she felt a pang of envy for Li Sicheng.
No matter the past or present, the money she had ever spent from the Nan family was minuscule. Nan Weiguo was frugal with her, unlike his lavish treatment of Nan Zhen’er.
By contrast, Li Sicheng had such a generous uncle.
Unconsciously, her eyes moistened.
“Fourth Uncle is really good to Li Sicheng. Is this... love extends to the house?” Nan Xing smiled brightly, her makeup perfectly masking the mist in her eyes.
But Li Beitian didn’t give her the chance to refuse. He took her hand, opened her palm, and pressed the card into it.
“I don’t like being refused,” Li Beitian said softly, looking down at her sparkling eyes with a commanding tone.
“Fourth Uncle, I...” Nan Xing’s lips quivered as she was about to speak when the car suddenly braked sharply.
Accompanied by the screech of tires, she lost her balance and fell into Li Beitian’s arms.
Her delicate nose bumped against his firm chest, causing her to wince in pain.
Soon, the crisp, refreshing scent emanated from his chest, enveloping her.
Nan Xing’s pores seemed to burst open. That familiar scent penetrated every nerve, instantly evoking memories of the night at Meise.
Passion, ambiguity, desire, temptation...
A chaotic mix that left her heart unsettled.
“You alright?” Li Beitian’s long arms circled her waist, one hand cradling her head gently. His voice was warm.
Nan Xing looked up and, in the next moment, their eyes met—dark, deep, and profound.
