Lin Haoyu seemed to have finally regained his wits. He looked at Ning Yunyun and deliberately softened his voice to coax her, “Yunyun, my uncle is here. How about you go to the restroom first? I’ll talk to you about our matter later.”

Ning Yunyun paused for a moment. The man standing by the door was cold and stern, radiating an invisible aura of power and chill that intimidated her.

She had heard Lin Haoyu mention that there were two people in the Lin family who were not to be trifled with: one was Grandpa Lin, and the other was the younger uncle.

But when she saw the man in person, her eyes lit up. Facing a man who was clearly more outstanding, even overwhelming compared to Lin Haoyu, her eyes almost sparkled with admiration.

Ning Yunyun readily agreed, nodding obediently as she grabbed her bag and headed to the restroom. When leaving, she even deliberately paused in front of Li Shiyan.

Little did she know, the man didn’t spare her a glance and walked straight into the hospital room.

Ning Yuyu had no choice but to leave and quickly went to the restroom to touch up her makeup.

Ning Yu clenched the fruit knife tightly as she looked at the tall, slender man at the door.

He was everywhere!

No matter where she went, she seemed to run into him. How could he be so persistent, like a lingering ghost?

Li Shiyan walked to the bedside and seemingly casually met Ning Yu’s gaze. Then he glanced at the apple she was peeling perfectly and smiled mockingly.

His eyes then returned to Lin Haoyu.

Lin Haoyu felt a chill run down his spine at that gaze. “Uncle.”

Li Shiyan stared at him for a moment, speaking gruffly, “Your father doesn’t trust you. He has me check on you every day to see if you’re still alive.”

Ning Yu was so angry that she pressed harder on the apple in her hands. While the two spoke, she glared fiercely at Li Shiyan several times.

Damn man.

That persistent damn man.

Coincidentally, Lin Haoyu saw her expression and thought Ning Yu was jealous over him. His heart immediately swelled with satisfaction.

He had said it all along—how could Ning Yu not like him?

But he couldn’t let Ning Yu and Yunyun stay in the same room again.

As for Li Shiyan’s words, Lin Haoyu was not angry at all. On the contrary, he felt honored. He knew that before, he couldn’t even say a word in front of his uncle!

Even if his father beat him to death, Li Shiyan wouldn’t have looked at him.

Since he was admitted to the hospital these past few days, his uncle had clearly treated him better. He must be starting to pay attention to him.

If they got closer, he might have a chance to work at his uncle’s company and become an executive—a bright future would be easy to come by!

Seeing that Li Shiyan was about to leave after finishing his inspection, Lin Haoyu suddenly had an idea.

He quickly grabbed Li Shiyan’s sleeve, “Uncle, it’s lunchtime. If you’re free, could you help me take Ning Yu home? She’s just a young girl; I don’t feel comfortable leaving her alone.”

It was a clear attempt to cozy up. Normally, Li Shiyan wouldn’t even spare him a glance.

Lin Haoyu was treating it like a last resort.

Li Shiyan’s gaze landed on Ning Yu. “Sure.”

Ning Yu was stunned. She turned to Lin Haoyu and silently cursed him in her heart.

Was he crazy or brainless?

He was planning to cheat on someone and yet wanted to shove her into the wolf’s den?

She really didn’t want to be alone with Li Shiyan.

That man was way too difficult to handle.

Ning Yu forced a smile and declined gently, “No need. It’s just going home, so no trouble for Doctor Li. I can go back by myself.”

Li Shiyan stared at her, expression indifferent and silent.

Lin Haoyu, however, couldn’t hold back, repeatedly making eyes at her, “Ning Yu, don’t be so distant! We’re family. Being able to have my uncle take you home is a blessing. Hurry and agree. And don’t call him Doctor Li anymore; just call him Uncle. Is it so hard for Uncle to earn that title from you?”

Ning Yu thought: …This blessing is yours. Do you want it or not??

She knew Lin Haoyu was always scheming, but usually not much. Today, she was almost laughing with frustration at him.

Yet his words left her no room to refuse. If she said no, it would insult the Lin family and Li Shiyan.

Ning Yu clenched the fruit knife and her apple, then turned to glare at Li Shiyan.

Li Shiyan raised an eyebrow, speaking lightly and teasingly, “It’s not the first time I’m helping.”

He hinted at something. Her fist tightened then relaxed. Fine—she was the one who slept with him first; she admitted defeat.

“Then thank you, Uncle,” Ning Yu said through gritted teeth as she stood up, set down her things, grabbed her bag, and left.

Ning Yunyun struggled to touch up her makeup in the restroom and returned to the hospital room in high spirits. She was about to call out “Uncle” in a clear voice but found that Li Shiyan had already left.

“Just left, probably went downstairs,” Lin Haoyu said, immersed in the joy of Ning Yu’s jealousy over him, his expression improving considerably as he looked at Ning Yunyun.

Ning Yunyun stomped her foot in frustration but smiled as she explained, “Brother Haoyu, Mom just called and told me to hurry back. She said there’s something going on.”

…

When Ning Yu reached the hospital entrance, the black G-Wagon was parked by the roadside.

The man had taken off his white coat. Between his long, slender, pale fingers, a cigarette dangled casually from the car window. White smoke curled upward, his face hidden in shadow and light, making his expression hard to read.

She was very familiar with that car—after all, she had been tormented inside it all night.

Ning Yu walked over and was about to open the rear door, but the front passenger door opened instead.

She didn’t want to get in.

The man sneered inside the car, “Were you waiting for me to invite you in?”

Ning Yu suppressed the urge to roll her eyes, got into the passenger seat, and obediently fastened her seatbelt.

The Ning family villa was quite far from the People’s Hospital, more than an hour away.

She had been afraid of running into the Ning family, so she deliberately chose a distant hospital.

It was August, right before university started—one of the hottest times of the year.

When she got in, the man flicked his cigarette, rolled up the window, and turned on the air conditioning. It was cool, but the atmosphere was awkward.

The quiet cabin was filled with the cold pine scent emanating from him. The air conditioning’s cold air blew directly onto Ning Yu’s face. The man drove without speaking, but the car was suffused with his aura and hormones.

Ning Yu felt restless every second, praying to arrive home soon so she could get out of the car.

Li Shiyan drove with one hand on the wheel, not fast—almost as if he was purposely torturing her.

Until he stopped at a red light.

The red light glowed steadily ahead, and several cars were stopped around them. With the windows rolled up, it felt as if they were cut off from the world.

The man’s voice was low and hoarse as he casually asked, “Have you made up your mind about what we talked about last time?”

Ning Yu tugged at her seatbelt and looked away evasively. “Doctor Li has said too many things— which one are you referring to?”

Li Shiyan scoffed mockingly. His bony fingers rested casually on the steering wheel as he turned to look at her. “Ning Yu, are you really naive enough to think I’m the same as I was eight years ago? That as long as you don’t give in, I wouldn’t dare touch you?”

He didn’t say which sentence, but they both understood—“Spend one more night with me.”

Ning Yu choked and looked at him directly. “Not interested.”

He laughed, “What, at this point, are you still trying to stay pure for your fiancé? Isn’t it a bit too late to hold out now?”
