Chapter Seventeen: The Happy Little Dog

Moved? Jiang Mengnan couldn’t quite say herself. After all, she was facing Lu Yu, whose looks were extraordinarily handsome. She believed that any woman would find it difficult to remain indifferent. She gave a small, forced laugh, trying to brush it off. After hemming and hawing for a while, Lu Yu lost patience. “You’re planning to sell me off for a hundred million? You really have some conscience.” “Huh?” What hundred million? Weren’t they talking about having feelings for him? Jiang Mengnan looked confused. “A hundred million?” Lu Yu suspected she was pretending to be clueless—and quite convincingly. “If I hadn’t shown up at the wrong time, you would have accepted that check, right?” “Oh, so that’s what you meant,” Jiang Mengnan realized belatedly. She patted Lu Yu’s arm reassuringly. “Your brother doesn’t seem like a good person; how could I help him? I was just teasing him, don’t take it seriously.” A wave of relief swept over Jiang Mengnan’s heart, and her expression returned to its usual composure. Lu Yu stared at her for a long moment, his gaze seeming to pierce right through her. “I hope that’s true.” Jiang Mengnan raised her hand. “I swear, I would never betray you.” Lu Yu gave a haughty “hmph” and said, “Let’s go.” Jiang Mengnan turned off the light and followed Lu Yu out the back door. She was just wondering why Lu Yu’s nanny car wasn’t there when she saw him unlock a Porsche Cayenne and get inside. Jiang Mengnan sighed inwardly, admiring how wealth allowed such capriciousness while climbing into the car. Just as she settled in, Lu Yu suddenly said, “What did you think I meant by ‘moved’ earlier?” Recalling Jiang Mengnan’s delayed realization, Lu Yu grew curious. He had thought he’d gotten away with it, but apparently she was still thinking about it. Jiang Mengnan gave a helpless laugh, unconsciously brushing her long hair and casually replying, “Nothing, haha, I forgot.” The next second, Lu Yu suddenly leaned closer, his handsome face inches away. Jiang Mengnan leaned back nervously. “W-what are you doing?” Lu Yu smiled faintly. “Don’t tell me... you’re moved by me?” Thinking of how Jiang Mengnan blushed and stammered every time they were close, Lu Yu boldly guessed. The thought made him quietly happy. But Jiang Mengnan quickly doused the hope with cold water. “No way! Don’t worry, you’re not my type.” She said it confidently, sounding not only unmoved but somewhat displeased. Lu Yu sank back into his seat, pouting. “Fine then.”

Jiang Mengnan nodded, relieved she hadn’t told the truth. She was merely Lu Yu’s shield, silently warning herself not to harbor unrealistic hopes. “Seatbelt.” Lu Yu grumbled, and before Jiang Mengnan could respond, he pressed the accelerator and sped off. The car was silent the whole way, the atmosphere oddly awkward. Jiang Mengnan stole a glance at Lu Yu’s furrowed brows and displeased expression, wondering what she had done to upset him this time. Men’s moods were so unstable. She shook her head helplessly and opened a mobile game to pass the time. They happened upon a traffic accident, and the road became congested. The Cayenne crawled along, swaying slightly. The slow pace was hypnotic, and midway through her game, Jiang Mengnan unexpectedly fell asleep. Her hands naturally rested on her lap, the game switched to autopilot and continued. Before long, the Cayenne pulled into the parking garage of their residential complex and came to a stop. Jiang Mengnan remained fast asleep. Lu Yu unbuckled his seatbelt, turned to look at her. Actually, Jiang Mengnan’s delicate features and slightly upturned lips made her rather cute. Leaning closer, he caught a faint scent of jasmine—refreshing and soothing. After quietly observing her for a long moment, Lu Yu realized his own oddity and hastily looked away. The glowing screen of Jiang Mengnan’s phone caught his attention. To his surprise, she was playing the same game. Since she’d fallen asleep halfway, she lost the round. Kindly, Lu Yu helped her retreat the game, only to find her ID displayed as “Not a Tough Guy!” Isn’t that his gaming partner? Unexpectedly, the “tough guy” was Jiang Mengnan herself. Lu Yu felt a thrill—as if meeting an online friend in real life. “Hmm? Are we here?” Jiang Mengnan yawned and rubbed her eyes. “Yeah, we’ve arrived.” Lu Yu’s warm reply came before he could hide his emotions. Without waiting, he got out, came around to the passenger side, and thoughtfully opened the door for her, a rare smile playing on his lips. Seeing this, Jiang Mengnan hesitated to get out. Just now, he was scowling; now his “service attitude” was so good? While she was still stunned, Lu Yu took the initiative to unbuckle her seatbelt. “Get out.” Only then did Jiang Mengnan slowly and cautiously “slide” out of the car.

Seeing Lu Yu’s continued bright smile, Jiang Mengnan asked, “You seem really happy.” The curve of Lu Yu’s mouth grew even more handsome. “You can take away the ‘seem’.” Rarely so forthcoming, Lu Yu pleased Jiang Mengnan’s curiosity as she teased, “What’s got you so happy? It’s almost like your persona on that show.” Lu Yu paused. “What persona?” Jiang Mengnan replied casually, “The happy little puppy. Who’d have known that behind the scenes…” Perhaps the atmosphere was too relaxed, Jiang Mengnan got carried away, realizing she’d talked too much, quickly covering her mouth and lowering her head guiltily. Lu Yu looked at her with interest. “Behind the scenes, what?” Jiang Mengnan shook her head. “Nothing special, just that the real you is quite nice.” So nice it felt unfamiliar. Covering her face, Jiang Mengnan stepped into the elevator first. Lu Yu followed calmly, watching her. “Do you like it?” Jiang Mengnan fiddled with her clothes, dodging the question. “As the client, you’ve been great.” Lu Yu wasn’t giving up. “I’m your husband.” Jiang Mengnan blushed, correcting, “Fake.” Lu Yu countered, “Once we have the certificate, we’re legally married.” Jiang Mengnan reminded, “There’s still our cooperation agreement in the drawer, remember?” Lu Yu, unconvinced, asked, “I’m asking you, as your husband, do you like it?” Jiang Mengnan closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “I do. Ask your countless female fans—who wouldn’t like it?” “Oh, and your second sister-in-law likes you a lot too!” Tsk, asking was pointless; he might as well have said nothing. Meanwhile, on set, Zhang Jingyan suddenly sneezed. “Who’s talking bad about me?”
