Death on the Bridge
Page 1/3
Ten years ago, I insisted on dragging my mother and stepsister to the back mountain to play on my birthday.
Mother fell into a stone pit and died on that very day—my birthday.
Father hated me for causing Mother’s death through my recklessness. He disowned me and instead treated my stepsister as his own flesh and blood.
“Don’t be angry, Father. I went to pay the debt to Mother.”
On the Crossing River Bridge, a mangled corpse dangled limply at the bridgehead.

I am dead.
After death, my soul involuntarily hovered beside Father, unable to leave.
It had been a long time since I looked closely at Father. He had aged considerably; white hairs now graced his temples.
Ever since I was eight, when my mischief caused Mother’s death, Father had hated me.
He said I was a jinx, a curse, and that he would never forgive me—he would act as though I never existed.
Since then, he had ignored me for ten long years, yet if anyone dared mention me in his presence, he would instantly fly into a rage.
“Don’t be angry, Father. After all, I listened to you—I went to repay Mother.”
“Can you recognize me, Father?”
The one who battered my face with stones left it unrecognizable. Has that made your job harder?
But it’s alright. You’re so capable; you’ll surely solve the case.
I floated in midair, gazing at this weathered man, my heart a tangle of emotions. Would he grieve for my death?
The answer came the next moment.
No, he wouldn’t.
I hadn’t answered my uncle’s calls all day. He was so worried that he came straight to the police station to find Father.
“Yu Tao, Manman is missing. Is she with you?”
Uncle and I had planned to celebrate Grandpa’s birthday today. The gift was left at the door, but I was nowhere to be seen.
Father’s face darkened when he heard my name.
“That jinx wouldn’t be with me.”
“She killed your sister. How can you still mention her?”
Uncle’s temper flared upon hearing Father’s angry words.
“Manman was just a child! How can you blame her!”
But before Uncle could finish, Father impatiently interrupted.
“If she died outside, it’s nothing to do with me. My only daughter is Yu Xiaoyuan!”
“If I were her, after killing my own mother, I would have died long ago to atone!”
“You’re utterly unreasonable!” Uncle shouted, pointing a finger at Father’s nose. “There will come a day you regret this!”
“Fooling yourself with illusions!” Uncle grabbed his phone from the table and left, calling my classmates on the way to ask if they had seen me.
Captain Liu overheard everything and sighed.
“Lin Yao has been gone for ten years. Manman is innocent. She lost her mother so young, she has suffered enough.”
At these words, Father’s eyes reddened, his fierce gaze brimming with tears.
“For ten years, every time I close my eyes, I see Yao’s restless spirit. The murderer is still at large! If it weren’t for her, Yao wouldn’t have died! Unless she dies before me now, I will hate her forever!”
Father’s words stabbed my heart like a knifeI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
