Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Motherland and the People Are Watching You
“If it is really as Ji Ling said, and this is a BOSS that can turn invisible, then our naked eyes would be unable to observe it. That would be pointless!”
But Liu Tianfeng immediately shook his head and looked at the two generals. “General Lin, General Xu, that is not what I meant!”
“Not what you meant?” General Lin frowned slightly. “Then what are you trying to say?”
“Take your time and explain it slowly. There is no rush!” General Xu immediately chimed in.
Liu Tianfeng nodded and swallowed before speaking. “What I mean is, this situation Jiang Ling described—I encountered it a few days ago as well!”
“But it was already dark then, so I thought I had encountered a ghost! After all, in the black mist of this strange invasion, running into bizarre events is only natural!”
“I did not pay much attention to it at the time. But what Jiang Ling has said suddenly reminded me of it. Perhaps what we encountered was the same thing!”
At Liu Tianfeng’s words, the two generals’ expressions changed at once.
Ji Ling also instinctively turned toward Nangong Lingyue, who was standing at the rear of the formation.
As it happened, Nangong Lingyue was looking toward Ji Ling as well.
It was obvious.
Although Nangong Lingyue had mentioned this matter the previous night, Ji Ling had gone to the scene to investigate and verify it, only to find nothing.
As he had said before, everything was merely Ji Ling’s subjective conjecture—or, more precisely, a deduction reached after eliminating several factors that were absolutely impossible.
There had been no evidence at all.
Ji Ling had not even been able to prove that Nangong Lingyue’s account was genuine.
But now that both Nangong Lingyue and Liu Tianfeng had encountered the same situation, their experiences served as mutual corroboration.
They proved that this phenomenon truly existed.
By this point, the authenticity of the matter had been confirmed beyond doubt.
The two generals looked at one another, apparently considering how to proceed with their investigation.
Just then, the sound of a transport aircraft’s rotors in the distance drew their attention.
The soldiers all looked up at the sky. Soon, one of them cried out in surprise, “It’s the T-357! It’s the Divine Bureau’s transport aircraft!”
“The Divine Bureau has come to airdrop supplies for us!”
“They haven’t abandoned us!”
Generals Lin and Xu were both overjoyed.
“Old Lin! It seems that although we have lost contact with the outside world, they can still keep track of us!” General Xu said excitedly. “Our safe zone has only just been expanded, and the Divine Bureau has already sent a transport aircraft to airdrop supplies!”
General Lin immediately nodded. “That’s right! They must have learned that we expanded the safe zone and that part of the sky above the black mist has cleared, allowing them to see the ground from above. That is why they sent people to deliver supplies!”
As he spoke, General Lin swept his hand through the air. “Comrades! Do not just stand there! Signal corps! Establish contact by light signal! Guide the aircraft to the drop coordinates!”
“Yes!”
Several signal soldiers shouted in unison. They immediately took out powerful searchlights and arranged them in a row on the ground, making them flash in sequence to form a light signal that guided the transport aircraft overhead.
High above the earth, the transport aircraft’s pilots noticed the signals from the ground. The co-pilot immediately said, “Captain! The light signal has been decoded! The location is suitable for an airdrop!”
“Good!” The captain nodded and guided the transport aircraft toward the designated position. “I will hover above the coordinates. Begin the airdrop immediately!”
“Yes!”
The co-pilot nodded and turned to leave the cockpit.
Inside the cargo hold, several soldiers held various supplies already fitted with parachutes. They opened the hatch and stood ready to drop them.
Soon, the transport aircraft hovered above the designated coordinates. The co-pilot immediately shouted, “Begin the airdrop!”
“Yes!”
Crate after crate of supplies, each fitted with a parachute, was thrown from the transport aircraft.
The aircraft was hovering approximately two thousand five hundred meters above the ground. This was considered a medium-to-high-altitude drop, the ideal height for airdropping supplies.
The parachutes attached to the supplies were equipped with special distance sensors. They would automatically deploy at a height of approximately eight hundred meters above the ground.
Before long, all the supplies had been dropped.
The soldiers on the ground gazed upward in delight, watching as one descending supply crate after another slowly opened its parachute, like trumpet-shaped flowers blooming across the sky.
Had they not been trapped in a desperate situation and then reclaimed a chance at life, none of the soldiers would ever have imagined that anything in this world could be more beautiful than the parachutes blossoming from today’s airdrop.
Soldiers were human, too. Trapped in such a desperate predicament, every one of them had faced life-or-death choices. It was only natural that their state of mind had changed.
Before the ancestral deity Yinglong awakened, the men had nearly suffered a breakdown that could have triggered a catastrophic mutiny. Fortunately, General Lin had handled the situation properly, and the tragedy never occurred.
Today’s airdrop, however, completely restored the soldiers’ morale.
They had been cut off from the outside world for more than a month and had received no assistance whatsoever. Almost everyone had wondered whether the outside world had already abandoned them.
They understood their situation well. Once they ventured deep into the black mist and were swallowed by it, there was nothing the outside world could do to save them unless they first saved themselves.
Ji Ling’s awakening of Yinglong had given the soldiers hope of saving themselves.
And the expansion of the safe zone over the past several days had finally brought them supplies from the outside world.
As the airdropped supplies descended one after another, the soldiers could no longer spare any thought for discipline or order. They surged toward the supply crates in a frenzy.
At that moment, the transport aircraft high above lowered its altitude and hovered approximately eight hundred meters overhead. It turned its loudspeaker to maximum volume and began broadcasting.
“Comrades~~~~~”
This was the first time in three months that the surviving soldiers had heard a voice from the outside world. They all erupted in excited cheers.
“Comrades! The outside world already knows your situation! The Divine Bureau sends its congratulations—and is even prouder of you!”
“Every one of you is a hero!”
“Please hold on! Continue expanding the safe zone! The outside world is actively preparing a rescue operation!”
“We wish you the best of luck! The motherland and its people are watching over you!”
When the broadcast ended, the transport aircraft circled upward into the heavens and gradually disappeared beyond the horizon.
The soldiers watched reluctantly until it vanished, then finally lowered their eyes.
General Lin cleared his throat and called out loudly, “Everyone! Form up!”
The soldiers immediately assembled in formation, standing tall with their chests out. Their faces now shone with renewed spirit, no longer displaying the listlessness of before.
