Chapter Sixty-Nine: Are You Going to Admit It?!
“Amazing, it feels like Zhou Shu was born to be a sniper.”
“Indeed. Although his physical abilities are around a brightness level of 85, I didn’t expect him to handle the recoil of the JS 12.7 sniper rifle so well.”
“Yes, the data is stunning, and his learning ability is extraordinary.”
“The hardest part for a sniper is finding the shooting window—those windows are fleeting. But Zhou Shu’s superpower is slow motion, it’s practically a cheat!”
“You just got here, so you probably missed that last shot—when the target was moving erratically and fast, I couldn’t even see it clearly, but Zhou Shu still managed a perfect ten-ring hit!”
“That’s impressive. Has it been ten hours since this morning? And he only studied theory earlier today.”
“I’ve seen his high school math and geography grades, he’s a top student. Ballistic calculations are no problem for him, and he excels in other subjects too, except for English. If not for that, he would have easily gotten into the Imperial University of Science and Technology.”
“Right, I checked his middle school records as well—his science grades were good. Probably just English holding him back, so he couldn’t get into the Imperial University through the regular exams, which is why he chose the ‘shortcut’ of the art class.”
“Well, that’s why they say he’s a born sniper—snipers don’t need English grades, haha. Just look at these numbers, they’re almost unbelievably perfect…”
Zhou Shu put down the rifle, pretending to rub his shoulder while listening to the technicians boasting about him.
He felt a bit embarrassed.
In truth, this level of recoil barely affected him. After all, the rifle was originally designed for “normal” soldiers, so all aspects were tailored within their recoil tolerance.
He rubbed his shoulder only because his “persona” was that of a warrior with extraordinary mental strength but average physical abilities.
Normally, he shouldn’t have been able to hear the technicians talking, but he’d grown so much stronger in such a short time. With a physical attribute of 1.08 and a mental attribute approaching 1.6, his sensitivity was unusually acute.
The technicians hadn’t conducted another health check on Zhou Shu in less than a week, so they were still working off his initial test results.
As technicians, they trusted data above all. By combining his physical data with today’s performance, they reached a startling conclusion:
Zhou Shu was a natural sniper!
Every sniper shoots static targets with great accuracy, but once the target starts moving, their precision drops.
If the target moves at a constant speed, snipers can calculate its velocity and lead their shot.
But if the movement is random, calculations become impossible. Sometimes, targets hide behind obstacles, offering a shooting window of only a fraction of a second, which makes things difficult.
For Zhou Shu, a fraction of a second stretches into “a few seconds.” It’s still brief, but more than enough for a sniper.
Moreover, they were sure Zhou Shu’s abilities would continue to grow, as he had just joined the Demon Suppression Bureau and had never used “enhancement serum.” Once he did, his capabilities would soar.
Not only did the technicians on site believe this, but Wang Kailun in the laboratory did as well.
Zhou Shu was not yet eighteen—he had plenty of room to grow.
The Demon Suppression Bureau of Dongyuan City was about to welcome a superhuman sniper!
Speaking of enhancement serum, with extraterrestrial creatures and mutants possessing such high physical attributes, how could the Bureau resist?
In ancient times, extraordinary individuals used the essence of monster beasts to refine pills and boost their own abilities. With modern biotechnology so advanced, there’s no way superhumans wouldn’t receive “nutritional supplements.”
Otherwise, why would the Bureau collect monster corpses?
Of course, given its long history, the Bureau adopted many traditions from Taoism and Immortal cultivation, using only the “essence” of animal-type mutants. Corpses of monsters transformed from humans were destroyed.
According to ancient cultivation theory, this helped avoid “demonic possession.” Modern biotech explained it as preventing prion viruses from invading the brain.
Even the formula for enhancement serum referenced many ancient pill recipes, removing toxic additives and extracting the purest “essence,” then blending it with various medicines to create today’s “enhancement serum.”
This enhancement serum was almost exclusively for superhumans. Ordinary people could use it, but the effects were weaker and the side effects stronger.
Most members of the Bureau’s combat teams had used it, which was why their bodies surpassed even decathlon world champions.
To supply this “essence,” the Bureau had a specialized department for breeding “monster beasts.”
Still, the Bureau didn’t simply destroy the humanoid monster corpses. They were excellent experimental material, and the Bureau measured their essence content—a key metric for evaluating mutant strength.
This also provided experimental data for new detection devices.
Some mutants were too well-hidden; the Bureau wanted to develop equipment to quickly detect them.
Currently, detection involved collecting blood samples for testing. If the sample was dark red, caution was advised; results would be ready in five minutes.
If the blood was truly black and oily, it was almost certain.
So, important locations had sampling and testing labs.
The Bureau had its own. Everyone entering for the first time was sampled; if nothing was found, they didn’t need to be sampled again, since mutants lacked the legendary shapeshifting abilities of ancient monsters.
Zhou Shu’s entry combined testing and sampling.
Wang Kailun reviewed recent data reports and noticed some corpses had relatively low essence content, with no clear explanation.
Essence content was a key indicator of mutant strength, but the toughness of skin, muscles, bones, and internal organs was also important. When all metrics aligned, strength could be calculated—but recently, some corpses didn’t match these standards.
How odd.
Could the mutation process have gone awry?
Or perhaps the “evolution pills” they took were counterfeit?
Recently, the Bureau had worked with border authorities to tighten entry controls, catching several cases of drug smuggling. With fewer domestic drugs, some people might be adulterating their supplies.
But as Wang Kailun examined the details, he found that most of these corpses were linked to Zhou Shu, or Zhou Shu was present during their collection.
“How strange. Does Zhou Shu hold some secret?”
Wang Kailun fell into deep thought.
“I need to ask someone about the situation on site.”
On the other side, Zhou Shu had no idea that Wang Kailun, that clever man, was beginning to suspect him.
Claiming mental exhaustion and needing to rest his shoulder, Zhou Shu ended his training early and was now eating dinner, pondering the final details of his powered exoskeleton modification plan.
Though only a few days had passed since he decided to start the project, Zhou Shu possessed master-level expertise in powered exoskeletons, complete with a fully functional prototype. Progress was swift and smooth.
He aimed to show Wang Kailun his results tonight.
The sooner the powered exoskeleton became practical, the more confidence humanity would have against monsters, and the fewer casualties the Bureau would suffer.
After all, these people were warriors fighting for humanity—any reduction in casualties was a blessing.
He devoured his meal, and though he’d used mental exhaustion as an excuse, it was not entirely false. His mind was fine, but he really was hungry.
After his physical stats surpassed 1, his consumption increased as well. It felt like his body was growing rapidly, just as it had when he was fourteen or fifteen—he was constantly hungry.
Thankfully, meals at the Bureau were nutritious and free, so he ate without restraint.
Once he finished, he organized his modification plan. Rather than perfecting it on his computer, he took his sketchbook straight to Wang Kailun.
He slapped the sketchbook onto Wang Kailun’s desk, saying only, “This is very important. Please read it all.”
Wang Kailun had no idea what Zhou Shu was up to, but he read it anyway.
Zhou Shu’s rapid progress had already earned him treatment equal to a full-fledged monster hunter.
The more Wang Kailun read, the more shocked he became. When mechanical arms, mechanical legs, and all the essentials for a powered exoskeleton came together, Wang Kailun instantly recalled something from the demolition zone a week ago and blurted out, “Are you finally admitting that you were the one who took down the monster in the demolition zone?”
Zhou Shu: “……”
How did you make that connection?
